I just finished reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Annemarie is a young girl that lives in Copenhagen, Denmark with her family. Her friend, Ellen, is a Jewish girl that has to go into hiding because the Germans are trying to locate all of the Jewish families. Annemarie's family risks their lives to help out the Rosen family. What is great about this book is that there are "tons" of text connections that can be made to the book Snow Treasure (the one that we are reading in class). The setting is very similar as are the circumstances with the German invasion of the countries in Europe.
The book was a very easy read. It included adventure and suspense as well. This would be a great book to read if you want to find out more about this time period for Social Studies.
