On the Wings of Hereos by Richard Peck takes place in the early 1940s during the time of World War II and is considered historical fiction.

Davy Bowman lives in a small town where there is always some kind of action going on. Games of "hide-and-seek" that take place in the neighborhood and the thrill of catching the "tricksters" on Halloween are things that Davy cherishs doing with his dad. Davy's brother Bill has recently enlisted and is going off to the war so his family is concerned with Bill staying safe. This book give you a glimpse of, not only the fun and games that can happen in small towns, but also how everyone must come together when there are serious issues such as war.

I was transformed back in time as I read 'On the Wings a Heroes', feeling through the well-formed characters what it was like to live during World War II. Richard Peck delivers a touching story complete with oddballs and quirky characters. A real winner!
