So Far From Home:  The Story of Mary Driscoll, an Irish Mill Girl 

This is a historical fiction book about a girl named Mary who lives in Ireland with her parents.  The circumstances in Ireland are very dire.  Her aunt that lives in the United States is paying her way to the U.S. so that she can work and make money on her own. 

This book is written in diary format that tells of the harsh life she has in Ireland, the treacherous trip that she makes on the ship to America, and the struggles that she goes through to build a new life.

This book is a quick read, but I caution you to read it carefully.  There are many details to be learned in the three parts of this book.
